Archived News: July is Literacy Month

Rotary InternationalThe RI Board of Directors has designated July as Literacy Month, a perfect time for Rotary clubs to develop their own literacy projects as well as raise awareness of Rotarian efforts worldwide to eradicate illiteracy. New District Governor Firoz Peera spoke to our group and outlined his plans for the 53 clubs in our district to work together in ”Bigger, Better and Bolder" ways to help fulfill Rotary International's annual theme of "Building Communities, Bridging Continents".  Teamwork, a renewed commitment to our communities, consulting with community leaders, delivering sustainable solutions with high impact, branding our service projects under the Rotary banner, honoring our club's unique purpose and mission, practicing proactive public relations, encouraging intergenerational cooperation and collaboration, and acting with urgency are the trademarks of DG Firoz's vision for this year.

Literacy for Liberia, Christ Lutheran McClintock Program and the two schools (Beirut & India). We are also involved with Hope for the Deaf project here in Charlotte, as the funding is for a special school for deaf students. These are just a sampling of the causes to do with literacy our club is involved with:
World Mission Outreach-Literacy for Liberia (container of books to Liberia)
• Christ Lutheran Church-McClintock Partnership $1,000
• Rotary Club of Beirut-Maamarieh School $1,000
• India Creche-School Operating Expenses $1,000

Archived News: May is Service Above Self Month

Rotary InternationalRotary is not a disaster relief agency, but we are very good at long-term recovery. After all the media attention dies down, Rotary will still be there on the ground – in Haiti’s case with the earthquake, with 17 local clubs and thousands of willing partner clubs. If Rotary’s recovery efforts in Bangladesh, Honduras, Indonesia, and countless other countries are any indication, Rotarians will be in Haiti long after public interest has faded and the media have moved on. This does not happen without committed Rotarians and volunteers to assist and put service above self on top. Our clubs can and do work together; they work through their own districts, in cooperation with other clubs and districts, and with the support of our Foundation. Everything that we accomplish is done through the strength of our clubs. And so each club must have autonomy to serve where and how it can serve best."

Archived News: March is Literacy Month

Rotary InternationalFor many years, Rotarians have been active in efforts to reduce illiteracy, from building schools and paying salaries of teachers to serving as tutors to collecting and distributing books and audiovisual materials to libraries. Rotarians are working with governments to create large-scale replicable literacy projects in the developing world. Considerable progress has been made in recent decades in reducing illiteracy; yet, close to a billion people lack the most basic literacy and numeracy skills. Millions more are functionally illiterate, lacking the skills necessary to meet the demands of everyday life. UNESCO illuminates some of the greatest challenges for those tackling illiteracy:

-- 98 per cent of the world’s illiterate population is in developing countries
-- 50 per cent of the world’s illiterate people live in India and China
-- More than 50 per cent of the population of Africa is illiterate
-- 2/3 of all those who lack literacy and numeracy skills are women
-- More than 130 million school-age children are not attending classes

Archived News: February is World Understanding Month

Rotary InternationalAmong all the service organizations in the world, Rotary International distinguishes itself as the only organization that focuses on World Understanding & Peace, through its Cultural, Educational and Humanitarian Programs. These programs are possible for two reasons. There are more than 30,000 Rotary clubs and 1.2M like minded Rotarians all over the world to implement them, and there are compassionate Rotarians in the developed part of the world, who donate generously, year after year. To name a few programs:

•    Ambassadorial Scholar: Each year college students travel to a university in another part of the world and spend a year learning local culture, appreciating problems, and helping clear the misconceptions among their peers.

•    Peace Scholars: This recent program, which involves two years of training in Conflict Resolutions, at the top seven universities in the world, is possible because of the generous donations from various Rotary Districts in the world.

Archived News: January is Rotary Awareness Month

Rotary InternationalIt's a time to learn more about our organization, and a time to focus on our public image. Raising awareness of Rotary is an important part of the RI Strategic Plan: The more Rotary is known for its good work, the more good work Rotary will be able to do.  As Past RI President Robert Barth of Switzerland said, “We believe that the Rotary pin on our lapel sends a message. It says, ‘You can rely on me. I am dependable, I am reliable, I give more than I take. I am available.’” Glenn E. Estess Sr., Foundation Trustee Chair.

Archived News: December is Family Month

Rotary InternationalThe idea of the family of Rotary is a simple one, and one that we celebrate every December during Family Month. Every Rotarian is part of the Rotary family – but our family is much larger than just our 1.2 million members. The family of Rotary includes every one of the men, women, and children who are involved in our work: the spouses and children of our members, our Rotary Foundation program participants and alumni, and all of those who are part of our programs, in the tens of thousands of Rotary communities around the world.

Rotary InternationalDuring November, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on taking Service Above Self seriously. It is about taking time to Create Awareness and Take Action by doing something to build goodwill and better friendships.

It is also about having a vision that enables all of us to see that something as simple as participating in Every Rotarian, Every Year with a contribution to our Rotary Foundation, can be a life-changing event of magnificent proportion in someone’s life, in the lives of all children.
