Since June 1994, the Charlotte-South Rotary Club has had a dedicated Rotarian in Thomas J. Smith. In 2009-2010 Tom Smith served as Club President, aggressively using the matching points concept to increase contributions to The Rotary Foundation. This successful model is still in use today and Tom continues to share his RI Foundation points with club members. To further engage members of the club and develop an additional fundraising source to our club’s golf tournament, Tom co-founded the club’s wine dinner. Tom is a graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute and has inspired other Rotarians to enroll in RLI. Tom has served on the District Vocational and Ethics Committee (2010-2011) and as such was involved in District 7680’s Four Way Test Video. Currently, Tom is serving on the Charlotte-South Rotary Club Foundation Board of Directors and has accepted the position of Assistant District Governor for 2012-2013. Tom is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Emory University. Professionally, Tom is Senior Vice President of the Asset Resolution Group at BB&T. He and his lovely wife Paula reside in Charlotte. “Papa Tom” to granddaughters Ava and Madelyn (and one on the way), Tom and Paula have a full house when all the kids come to visit! Son Douglas and wife Laura reside in St. Petersburg, FL, son Thomas of Charlotte, stepson Brian and wife Lindsey of Wilmington, NC and stepdaughter Shannon and husband Jeff of Waxhaw NC. Tom is certainly our VERY Distinguished Rotarian!

Announcements for week of November 14, 2011

Welcome to our three new members: Macon Dunnagan, Mary Alice Warren, and Lee Bowman. If you haven’t already, please introduce yourself and get to know them.

Thanks to our social committee for a fabulous party Saturday night at Belle Acres! There was a good crowd and every one present had a great time!

If you are interested in the Mt. Kili climb, Macon is hosting a question and answer session about climbing, training, and equipment at Jesse Brown’s Outdoors (South Park) tonight at 6:30 PM. There will be another climbing informational session on December 8 at Jesse Brown’s. In addition, a mandatory fundraising meeting on Saturday December 3 at 10 AM at Belk Corporate Office.

Reminder: There is NO club meeting on Monday, November 21, 2011. However, the Board will meet to review the project fund requests at Zebra from 12-2. We will all get together again on Monday, November 28 at Zebra at 12:30.

Please note that I have a new email address: JMNewton61@gmail.com for all Rotary correspondence. You can continue to reach me by cell phone 704.616.0908 or my home phone 704.541.0787.

Rotary Youth Exchange: If anyone in our club is interested in hosting a high-school student during the 2012-2013 school year, please get in contact with Stuart Meyerson (Stuart.Meyerson@nationalhealing.com) by December 1. Before Karen and I commit to the club’s expense to host the child, we want to reach out to all club members to see if we can arrange the required hosting. The club-paid fee includes monthly stipend, orientation and other district-planned events. There are mandatory orientations for clubs and host families prior to the student’s arrival.

Rotary Group Study Exchange 2012 to Lagos, Nigeria: The good news is that District 9110 in Lagos, Nigeria, will indeed have a Group Study Exchange with our district. The bad news is that we were only informed of a definite commitment on Friday, November 11, although negotiations had been going on for months. That means that we have to accelerate our process for the selection of team leader and team members. You now have the opportunity to be a part of the Group Study Exchange to Lagos, Nigeria, as Team Leader. Young professionals (ages 22-40) who are not Rotarians also have the opportunity to be team members. Therefore, applications for team leader need to be sent via email to Dotty McIntyre by December 5 and applications for team members by December 12. Applications are attached. Their team will be here in April of 2012 (specific dates TBD). Our team will be in Nigeria in May (dates TBD). The website for Lagos is http://www.lagosstate.gov. For their district, it is http://www.rotary9110ng.org. Since a south-western state in a country in Africa may be out of your comfort zone, please research the area carefully. But remember that this could be the experience of a lifetime. Additional questions should be directed to Dottie McIntyre, District 7680 GSE Coordinator, drdottiemac@hotmail.comor call 704-482-2815 or 704-600-5585.
